Kona Gold Vanilla and Extract Kits
True, natural vanilla flavor comes from a long, brown vanilla bean, which in turn grows from a delicate yellow orchid blossom. The Hawaiian Islands are the only place in this country close enough to the equatorial sun to tease forth this savory bean. Kona Gold Vanilla began decades ago through the persistence of an orchid lover in Kona. That gentleman passed cuttings of his vanilla orchids on to many local growers, and thus vanilla production came to Hawai’i. Kona Gold Vanilla has carefully tended and multiplied the cuttings that were entrusted to them and now hosts a quarter acre of vibrant green vines.
To make your own vanilla extract with Kona Gold's kits: 1. Cut your 1/2 oz. of beans in half 2. Now cut the halves the long way 3. Push out the tiny seeds in their goo (called roe) put them aside (your thumbnail works great for this) 4. Pour four ounces (1/2 cup) of the alcohol (Vodka works greaet) into the 6 oz. bottle 5. Add the bean pieces and the seeds to the bottle and give it a thorough shaking. 6. You're done, just wait, shaking your bottle once a day for the first week and once in a while thereafter. In four weeks the vanilla extract is done and ready to use. You can filter it if you like but the little seeds are attractive in baked goods and tell everyone you used real vanilla. 7. The beans can stay in your mix for up to six months, be filtered out, dried and then put in some sugar to flavor it. The kits are available on the Big Island at Kailua Candy Company, Waimea General Store, and Sweet Paradise or email them.
